Why supplement?
High elemental zinc, poor dissolution
Zinc oxide is almost pure zinc oxide, with the highest elemental fraction. It dissolves poorly in water, and fasting oral absorption is limited. If the goal is raising blood zinc, an organic salt or zinc sulfate is usually more reasonable.
Topical barrier
In dermatology and sunscreen, zinc oxide reflects UV and astringes wounds—that is a local physical action, not the same setting as oral zinc.
How to take it
Check the elemental zinc on the label first.
How oftenUse according to daily need; long-term high doses should be medically monitored.
What to watch
Cautions
Different forms cannot be swapped by name alone. Dose by elemental amount or vitamin equivalents, not by salt weight.
High long-term doses may cause copper deficiency, anemia, and weaker immune function.
Tetracyclines, fluoroquinolone antibiotics, and penicillamine should be taken apart from zinc.
· Nausea
· Stomach discomfort
· Metallic taste
· Long-term excess can cause copper deficiency and neurologic symptoms.
Long-term dependenceNot addictive; high doses can cause nutrient antagonism and copper deficiency.
