Why supplement?
Zinc acetate in lozenges
Several cold-lozenge trials used zinc acetate; discussion centers on oropharyngeal local zinc concentration. Elemental amount and how fast the lozenge dissolves affect how it feels. Swallowing a tablet to correct a gap is not the same use as a lozenge.
Still elemental zinc
When swallowed, the use is the same as other zinc salts: filling a zinc gap. Acetate is not an antiviral drug.
How to take it
When taken with antibiotics or minerals such as iron and calcium, stagger doses as a professional advises.
How oftenUse according to daily need; long-term high doses should be medically monitored.
What to watch
Cautions
High long-term doses may cause copper deficiency, anemia, and weaker immune function.
Tetracyclines, fluoroquinolone antibiotics, and penicillamine should be taken apart from zinc.
· Nausea
· Stomach discomfort
· Metallic taste
· Long-term excess can cause copper deficiency and neurologic symptoms.
Long-term dependenceNot addictive; high doses can cause nutrient antagonism and copper deficiency.
