Why supplement?
Lentinan and immune nutrition
Lentinan is a fruiting-body wall β-glucan. Clinical injection is not the same route as oral dry powder. Oral use is usually food or dry powder for weeks of immune-related support, watching upper-respiratory episode frequency. Products should state fruiting body or lentinan specification.
Light exposure and vitamin D2
Fruiting-body ergosterol can convert to vitamin D2 under UV; some dried shiitake labels list D2. As a plant-style vitamin D source, that batch must be labeled—not every shiitake powder contains it. Supplements usually use dried material or extract, which is not the same product form as cooking fresh mushrooms.
