A luminal umbrella that adsorbs and clears harmful bacteria
Yeast cell-wall polysaccharides can adsorb some pathogens and toxins and then leave with the stool, like opening a physical umbrella in the lumen. This adsorption is especially useful in severe watery diarrhea or when antimicrobials have emptied the community. The cell wall binds pathogens away and out; the lumen is as if swept, and watery diarrhea can be contained.
Stimulates mucin and protects the gut wall
It promotes goblet-cell mucin secretion and thickens the mucus layer so the wall is less easily left bare in the leftover-antimicrobial period. In people whose gut barrier is thinned during an antimicrobial course, what is felt is less tenesmus and less mucus in the stool as mucus covers epithelium again. After the mucus layer thickens, the tenesmus of needing to go with nothing there eases more readily.
