Palmitate attaches to retinol's hydroxyl to form the most common storage ester in the liver; only after esterase hydrolysis can the alcohol enter the visual cycle. Released retinol takes part in regenerating 11-cis-retinal; when stores are adequate, night adaptation less often worsens together with them. Animal liver and milk fat themselves are also mainly esters.
Maintains mucosal epithelium
Released retinol also maintains differentiation of respiratory and intestinal epithelium; when stores are adequate, mucosal dryness less often appears together with poor night vision. Skincare formulas sometimes add the ester form; the effect arrives more slowly than the aldehyde because hydrolysis is still required. Diet and supplements both treat this ester as a stable carrier of preformed vitamin A.
