Why supplement?
Citrate
Potassium citrate is more water-soluble; gut tolerance is usually better than the oxide or sulfate. Citrate can pull water into the bowel, especially at high doses of magnesium citrate. The benefit is still the nutritional role of potassium.
Membrane potential
Potassium citrate is a source of potassium. High intracellular potassium keeps neuromuscular excitability. Food potassium should lead; supplement doses are capped, especially when kidney function is poor.
How to take it
Potassium supplement doses are usually low; do not treat low blood potassium yourself with salt substitutes.
How oftenGet it mainly from food; use supplements only as a clinician directs.
What to watch
Cautions
People with kidney or heart disease, or who take ACE inhibitors, ARBs, or potassium-sparing diuretics, should not self-start potassium.
High blood potassium can cause dangerous heart-rhythm problems.
· Stomach discomfort
· Nausea
· High blood potassium can cause muscle weakness and heart-rhythm problems.
Long-term dependenceNot addictive; buildup with impaired kidney function can cause high blood potassium.
