Why supplement?
Acetate
Potassium acetate is an acetate salt with good solubility, used in some mineral lozenges or liquids. It supplies potassium ions; acetate is not the active.
Membrane potential
Potassium acetate is a source of potassium. High intracellular potassium keeps neuromuscular excitability. Food potassium should lead; supplement doses are capped, especially when kidney function is poor.
How to take it
Potassium supplement doses are usually low; do not treat low blood potassium yourself with salt substitutes.
How oftenGet it mainly from food; use supplements only as a clinician directs.
What to watch
Cautions
People with kidney or heart disease, or who take ACE inhibitors, ARBs, or potassium-sparing diuretics, should not self-start potassium.
High blood potassium can cause dangerous heart-rhythm problems.
· Stomach discomfort
· Nausea
· High blood potassium can cause muscle weakness and heart-rhythm problems.
Long-term dependenceNot addictive; buildup with impaired kidney function can cause high blood potassium.
