High elemental magnesium, poorly absorbed, more laxative

Magnesium oxide is often used for constipation rather than filling tissue magnesium. If the goal is nutritional magnesium, an organic salt is usually more reasonable. The elemental fraction is high but bioavailability is low.

ATP and neuromuscular function

Magnesium oxide is a source of magnesium. Magnesium stabilizes ATP phosphate groups and helps muscles relax. This salt supplies elemental magnesium; oxide and organic salts differ sharply in absorption and laxative effect.

Best timeMorning or midday; if it helps sleep or relaxation, you may switch to after dinner through bedtime

The compound weight of magnesium oxide cannot be treated as the elemental magnesium dose.

General wellnessAdult recommended daily intake: men 400–420 mg、women 310–320 mg elemental magnesium (including diet); supplemental general wellness amounts are often 100–200 mg elemental magnesium
Specific needsFrom supplements, the typical adult daily safety upper limit is about 350 mg elemental magnesium; sleep or muscle goals often use 200–350 mg, and do not exceed this on your own long term.

How oftenUse as a supplement when needed; do not self-use long term as a laxative or antacid.

Cautions

People with kidney disease, long-term constipation, or on antacids should ask a doctor first.

High doses may reduce absorption of tetracyclines, quinolone antibiotics, and levothyroxine.

Common side effects

· Diarrhea or loose stools

· Abdominal discomfort

Rare but important

· People with impaired kidney function may develop high blood magnesium and muscle weakness.

Long-term dependenceNot addictive; long-term laxative use can mask an underlying bowel problem.
