Protects intestinal epithelium and reduces adhesion
It has the S-layer proteins typical of Lactobacillus acidophilus, covering the intestinal epithelium as a physical protective layer so some pathogens find it harder to stick directly. In people whose food hygiene is unsteady and whose gut is easily disturbed by incoming bacteria, a protein layer over the epithelium makes it harder for pass-through organisms to settle.
Maintains acid-producing occupancy in the gut
It also produces lactic acid and expresses adhesins, composing a defense of epithelial covering plus acid: attach first, then suppress neighbors with acid. In everyday probiotic use it stands for this occupancy-plus-acid path. When food hygiene fluctuates, the abdomen is less easily disrupted.
