L-Tryptophan

L-Tryptophan

L-tryptophan is an essential amino acid. Tryptophan hydroxylase makes serotonin from it, and the pineal gland can then convert that to melatonin. It is used for mood and sleep.

Primary

Improves mood and appetite regulation

Tryptophan hydroxylase in brain and gut turns tryptophan into serotonin, which takes part in mood, appetite, and the gut-brain axis; it competes with other large neutral amino acids for entry into the brain. Turkey, eggs, and whey are relatively rich in it. People with swinging mood or unsteady appetite more often map onto this path.

Primary

Supports sleep rhythm

The pineal gland turns serotonin into melatonin by acetylation and methylation; night-time secretion drives sleepiness and the circadian rhythm. For people who put off falling asleep or whose schedule is wrecked after shift work, changes in time to sleep and night waking are more often noticeable with continued use.
