Supports methylation reactions
Methionine and ATP make S-adenosylmethionine, the main methyl donor for DNA, neurotransmitters, and phospholipids. After the methyl group is transferred, it is regenerated through the folate and vitamin B12 cycle. Eggs, fish, and meat are the main food sources; one-carbon methylation starts here.
Supports transsulfuration and reducing power
After the methyl group is transferred, homocysteine goes toward cysteine via the cystathionine path and can then make glutathione, linking methionine to cellular reducing power. It is also the initiating residue of protein synthesis; sulfur amino-acid supply and the methyl cycle meet here.
