L-Ergothioneine (EGT)

L-Ergothioneine (EGT)

Ergothioneine is a thiol betaine derived from histidine. Mushrooms are rich in it, and the OCTN1 transporter moves it into red blood cells, liver, and the eye.

Protects red blood cells against oxidation

OCTN1 on the cell membrane specifically delivers this thiol betaine into red blood cells, where intracellular levels can be much higher than in plasma. Red cells live a long time and shuttle oxygen constantly; once inside, the thiol can buffer peroxides. Changes in oxidative markers are more often noticeable with continued use.

Supports reducing power in eye tissue

The eye and liver also accumulate ergothioneine through the same transporter, making a local thiol reserve. Enoki and shiitake are dietary sources. For people who use their eyes for long stretches or who watch photo-oxidation, changes in ocular-tissue oxidative markers are more often noticeable with continued use.
