Transamination into the energy cycle
Aspartate aminotransferase transfers the amino group to α-ketoglutarate, leaving oxaloacetate that feeds the citric acid cycle and can also enter gluconeogenesis. During exercise, muscle uses this transamination path to handle both nitrogen and the carbon skeleton. Aspartate itself can also act as an excitatory neurotransmitter at NMDA and related receptors.
Aspartate step of the urea cycle
In the liver, aspartate condenses with citrulline to form argininosuccinate, an indispensable urea-cycle step on which nitrogen excretion after a high-protein meal depends; cleavage of argininosuccinate regenerates arginine. Pyrimidine nucleotide synthesis also uses aspartate as an amino donor. The use is nitrogen disposal and an energy carbon skeleton, moving cytosolic nitrogen into urea.
