Helps maintain blood glucose during exercise
During exercise, muscle aminates pyruvate to alanine and releases it into blood; the liver then transaminates it and runs gluconeogenesis to send glucose back to muscle. In endurance training or after a longer stretch without food, this cycle is an amino-acid hub for glucose homeostasis, and the liver is the glucose exit.
Supports amino-group flow in the liver
Alanine aminotransferase interconverts alanine plus α-ketoglutarate with pyruvate plus glutamate, a core reaction of everyday amino-group flow in the liver. After dietary protein is digested, alanine is often one of the glucogenic amino acids that rises most clearly in blood.
