The most used ferrous salt

Ferrous sulfate is the most studied; elemental iron is clear, and nausea and constipation are also most common. Alternate-day dosing can improve tolerance. The use is blood formation in iron deficiency; do not supplement long term without deficiency.

Hemoglobin oxygen transport

Ferrous sulfate is a source of iron. Ferrous iron sits at the center of heme. This form is used to replace iron after deficiency is confirmed; menstrual, pregnancy, and toddler needs are higher.

With foodAbsorption is better on an empty stomach; if it upsets your stomach, switch to after a meal (not on an empty stomach). It may be taken with vitamin C-rich foods
Best timeMorning or midday

Check the elemental iron on the label first.

General wellness8 mg elemental iron/day for adult men and postmenopausal women; 18 mg/day for women aged 19–50
Specific needsThe adult daily safety upper limit is 45 mg elemental iron; iron-deficiency anemia treatment must be prescribed by a clinician using lab tests. Without evidence of deficiency, do not exceed this on your own long term.

How oftenUse only when needed, based on tests and a doctor's advice; do not take it long term as a general wellness supplement.

Cautions

Do not self-start long-term iron unless iron deficiency is documented.

Do not self-start iron without evidence of deficiency; men and postmenopausal women should find the cause first.

People with hemochromatosis, anemia of chronic disease, or gut disorders should be assessed by a doctor.

Common side effects

· Nausea

· Constipation or dark stools

· Abdominal discomfort

Rare but important

· Excess can cause acute poisoning; accidental ingestion by children is an emergency.

Long-term dependenceNot addictive; unnecessary long-term iron can accumulate and become toxic.
