Why supplement?
Inorganic sulfate
Copper sulfate is an inorganic sulfate salt. The elemental fraction is relatively high, water solubility is fair, and gut irritation is more noticeable. Taking it with food can ease discomfort. What it supplies is the physiology of copper itself.
Iron transport and collagen cross-links
Copper sulfate is a source of copper. Ceruloplasmin helps move iron, and lysyl oxidase cross-links collagen. This salt supplies trace copper; long-term high zinc is the usual way to induce copper shortage.
How to take it
Note that zinc supplements may affect copper status.
How oftenSupplement only when diet is inadequate or there is a medical need.
What to watch
Cautions
People with liver disease, Wilson disease, or long-term high zinc intake should ask a doctor first.
Both copper deficiency and excess can cause blood and neurologic problems.
· Nausea
· Stomach discomfort
· Long-term excess can cause liver damage.
Long-term dependenceNot addictive; long-term excess carries a risk of accumulated toxicity.
